The Taste of Wild Water
Walking through the deep green Indiana woods and tasting the "wild water" with his great-grandfather impressed the author with its richness and life, with a deep-felt connection to this elder and to nature. Rich memories also came from his great grandfather's backyard office where he provided herbal remedies for local people; the smells, dried plants, and jars of remedies left an indelible impression. While these intense sensory impressions eventually faded, they re-emerged in later years.
The connection and emotion that humans feel for their pets is similar to the connection that our ancestors felt for nature and that Buhner's great-grandfather felt for the woods. But our ways of thinking changed and, because of that, our ways of connecting with nature did, too.
The Two Wounds

While at a speaking engagement in New York City, Buhner meets three women who make up his unusual audience. Their reasons for coming to his lecture turn out to be the same: their recent communications with plants made them feel crazy. This communication with plants used to be common but is no longer acceptable, so we think we are crazy when they occur.
