Help to Make the World a Better Place
Eating habits do affect people's moods and behavior, and in this way they contribute to the tenor of the world. When large numbers of people have bad moods, or powerful people have bad moods, there is a greater risk of negative emotional chain reactions. Bad nutrition and bad moods are not just a problem in American communities. As U.S. companies have increasingly exported their junk foods to other nations, the incidence of obesity and diabetes has soared. Bad diets contribute to some of the seeds of conflict because they interfere with healthy moods and how people think and act.
But, people as individuals can make a difference. Jack Challem has long believed that positive, long-lasting social change -- characterized by greater patience, tolerance, and fairness -- is best accomplished on a grassroots, one-to-one basis. For example, people cannot legislate the eating habits of millions of adults; however, people in many communities have successfully urged their governments to prohibit the sale of junk foods in public schools. It's a small step, one of a great many steps to be taken, but an important step nonetheless.
It's also important that people relearn how to connect with other human beings, to break bread with them. To do this, people must consider what they have in common instead of emphasizing opposing political, social, and religious views. People can learn from one another.
As individuals, people have the power to control their own eating habits and do many other things to improve their moods and behavior, as well as their overall health. Every day holds opportunities to make important choices. People can choose to drive to a fast-food restaurant for a burger, fries, and a soft drink or go to a market for more healthful and wholesome foods. People can react with irritation and anger at inconsiderate drivers, or they can take a deep breath to protect themselves against negative emotional shrapnel. People can influence the eating habits and the lifestyles of their family members and set an example for their friends and coworkers.
People can, in small ways, affect the quality of foods in the marketplace. Businesses want to earn a profit, and consumers can dictate the foods they produce by how they spend their money. The phenomenal growth of organic foods is one example. Ten years ago, organic foods were a niche in the health food industry. Today, being organic is a sophisticated and powerful selling point. As another example, a small town in Italy recently rededicated itself to traditional food shops and, in doing so, forced a fast-food restaurant out of business. People can support markets and restaurants that cater to healthful and nutritious foods, and encourage other people to do the same.
Each person has the power to change their life. Every single step each person takes toward health improves their life, creating gentle ripples that positively affect the people around them. Those people will feel better, their minds will be clearer, and they will help to make the world a better place.
