How Can I Tell If I Have Gallstones?

Following are some of the common indications that gallstones are present. Much more detail about the connection between these symptoms and particular physical problems is included in the book.
  • Skin: "liver spots", seen as brown or black spots, most frequently found on the backs of the hands, temples or forehead, or near the shoulder blades; vertical lines between the eyebrows; hair loss in the center of the head.
  • Nose: the tip hardens, widens or has a cleft in it, is constantly red.
  • Eyes: skin under eyes is yellowish or grayish, watery bags under eyes, vision problems, dull-looking eyes.
  • Mouth: tongue has a yellow or white coating at the back and/or teeth impressions on the side, cracks or pimples on the tongue, bleeding gums, tooth decay or other problems, bad breath, frequent burping.
  • Hands, nails, feet: vertical ridges, white spots or horizontal indentations in fingernails, hard lump on the ball of the foot, fourth toe has callus at tip.
  • Fecal matter: odor is sharp or sour, stools are dry and hard or sticky, color is pale or the color of clay.

The Most Common Causes of Gallstones

Gallstones themselves can be basically classified as either cholesterol or pigment stones. Cholesterol stones, made up of 60 percent cholesterol, are greenish, yellowish, or tan and fairly soft. An increased amount of cholesterol or a decreased amount of bile salts will lead to the creation of these stones. Pigment stones are brown or black and quite hard. They are formed from excess bilirubin, a substance left after red blood cells are broken down in the liver. If not removed, small stones will either grow or cluster with other stones to block liver and gallbladder ducts. Very few people in industrialized countries are free of gallstones.

One of the main causes of gallstones is eating habits. Eating too much food or eating too frequently depletes digestive enzymes and leaves behind undigested food. This rots in the intestines and becomes a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, eventually congesting the lymphatic and circulatory systems and overworking the liver and excretory systems. An adequate meal fills the stomach ¾ full, allowing room for digestion to take place.

Eating between meals is usually chosen because of a rushed life, food cravings, emotional discomfort or the eating of processed or fast foods. The body is naturally set up to process the main meal at mid-day, with lighter meals in the morning and early evening. Eating again before a previous meal has digested inhibits thorough digestion of both meals, leaving behind numerous toxins that will clog the body's systems.

A heavy meal of meat or oily foods in the evening, especially after 6 p.m., will also not be completely digested. Since excessive protein consumption is a major cause of blood vessel problems, this is even more important to monitor in the evening meal. Bedtime should be at least three hours after eating.

A vegetarian or vegan diet is a good way to avoid the problems of heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes and many others. The two-thirds of the world's population that eats a no-meat diet avoid these health issues. They do not lack protein because the body's need for it is actually quite small and the liver makes whatever protein the body needs. The same is true for elephants, gorillas, and bulls - all large, strong vegetarians. Actually, the dead protein cells from cooked animals aren't very useful to the body; it needs live healthy plant proteins.

Gallbladder attacks are known to be triggered by the following foods, in this order: eggs, pork, greasy food, onions, fowl, pasteurized milk and more. Avoiding these foods has been shown to eliminate gallbladder attacks. Liver function is severely compromised by the eating of processed and preserved foods, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, sugar, and carbonated drinks. Poor diets that include these foods will cause gallstones, even in children!

Processed salt also has negative effects on the body. Salt from the ocean contains 92 minerals whereas table salt, which has been chemically made and bleached, has only sodium and chloride, thus depriving the body of essential minerals. Sea salt supports effective digestion and helps to keep the digestive system clean. Processed salt disrupts the free flow of fluids between cells, which means that the fluid collects in the joints and lymphatic system. This results in high blood pressure, weight gain and gallstones. Celtic and Himalayan salts are healthy choices, as are other ocean-source salts.
