Exercise is Essential

There are many healthful benefits of exercise.

  • It helps regulate at least eighteen different hormones that regulate growth hormones, which help correct body weight, slow down the aging process, increase the body's ability to produce energy and break down fat, stabilize blood sugar, and regulate appetite and body temperature.
  • It stimulates endorphins which block pain, improve mood and promote a healthy menstrual cycle.
  • It helps to regulate thyroid function which improves: skin problems, constipation, a fuzzy head, puffy eyes, water retention, lethargy, and metabolic rate which helps correct weight imbalances.
  • It helps breast-feeding mothers produce sufficient breast milk.
  • It helps prevent and control blood sugar disorders such as: diabetes, insulin resistance, and hypoglycemia.
  • It stimulates natural anti-inflammatory chemicals that help deal with diseases such as: gout, arthritis, and fibromyalgia.
  • It helps people efficiently manage stress.
  • It improves lung and heart function, and regulates blood pressure.
  • It helps increase bone density, assisting in the prevention of osteoporosis.
  • It helps regulate reproductive hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

There are important points to remember for an exercise program to be effective. Make exercise habitual, progressive, and systematic.

  • Habitual: Exercise at the same time of the day for at least 21 days, the time that it takes to either make or break a habit.
  • Progressive: Start with a few minutes a day; easily and steadily increase to 20-30 minutes of exercise each day.
  • Systematic: Include a system of exercises that does three things:
    1. Works the lungs with running, walking, swimming, and other aerobic exercises.
    2. Stretches the muscles. It is better to stretch them after warming up.
    3. Includes resistance work such as a workout in the garden with digging and moving things and push-ups; parents of small children can get a great workout with the children on the carpet.
