The French Paradox Unraveled

So, we have learned that the French eat a fresh, local diet containing plenty of butter and oils. And this diet gives them low levels of coronary heart disease, contrary to the general medical establishment's view on the subject. We also noted that many people with higher than "normal" levels of cholesterol actually have healthy arteries. In actuality, the plaque in arteries comes from damage by free radicals, processed vegetable oils and vitamin/mineral deficiencies due to processed food.

The following guidelines can provide a check against your own diet:

  • Eat at least five servings of fresh fruits and colorful vegetables daily.
  • Eat organic meats and eggs.
  • Use cold-pressed or extra virgin oils and pure butter.
  • Drink red wine for its phytonutrients and antioxidants.

Action Plan -- You and Your Physician

The author's original intent was to write a book explaining cholesterol and its role in CHD. Instead, he discovered doctors and researchers who were willing to risk their reputations and challenge the pharmaceutical corporations, the food processing industry, and the medical associations by publishing the truth. It's important to work with a physician if you have health problems -- and by "physician," the author refers to doctors, nurses, osteopaths, practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine and naturopaths like himself. The stress here is on "work with"; do your homework and make informed decisions about your health. If medications are recommended, then ask for a referral to get a second opinion and do your research before deciding. Keep in mind alternatives such as chelation therapy before starting on a regimen of drugs that will last the rest of your life.

Start keeping your own medical log of test results such as weight, blood pressure, blood work results, heart tests such as homocysteine, supplements you are taking, and perhaps even a CT scan. Improve your diet so your body will have the foods it needs for optimal health. Get adequate exercise too so heart disease will not become part of your life.
