This book is written for those worried about cholesterol and heart disease. The author who is a qualified Naturopath and Clinical Nutritionist suffers from familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic defect that causes very high cholesterol levels. Diagnosed with a cholesterol level of 504 mg/dl (European equivalent 13.2 mmol/L) he consulted numerous experts on cholesterol and research data which led to the publishing of this book. The author does not take any medications for his cholesterol, enjoys excellent health, and this book shares his important research which took five years. To prove his findings he looks at France, a country that enjoys low levels of heart disease, and acknowledged for having one of the best healthcare systems in the world. Hence the name of the book "Cholesterol and The French Paradox.”
The French Paradox
The "French paradox" puzzles many because the French diet of buttery croissants, creamy cheeses and red wine leaves them slim and healthy while many Americans struggle to eat a "healthy" diet and end up unhealthy and overweight. With their rich gourmet meals, the French consume three times as much saturated animal fat as Americans and yet one-third as many die of heart attacks. Scientists would certainly like to understand the reason that eating all these supposed artery-clogging, high cholesterol foods can leave French people healthy.
This book explains the French paradox, an explanation that is not popular with pharmaceutical corporations and major food companies. The fact is that no scientific connection has been found between cholesterol and heart disease.
The Medical Worlds
Due to his own high cholesterol levels, the author undertook a personal study of cholesterol and heart disease. When he first began this search, he couldn't find much useful information. When he tried again in 2000, he found that the medical community in the U.S. and Europe were divided into two opposing camps. Many research doctors did not believe that cholesterol caused heart disease, whereas practicing doctors (MDs) believed it did, and he noted these observations:
Research doctors are a dedicated group working to find useful information and cures for diseases. However, if their findings contradict the established medical community and/or drug companies, they are often shunned. Two Australian researchers experienced this when they announced that stomach ulcers were caused by bacteria. Since this finding would stop the sales of two popular drugs, these researchers were publicly discredited. However, once the patent on those drugs expired, suddenly the truth came out and those drugs disappeared. The researchers, Doctors Barry Marshall and Robin Warren, were awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Medicine for this discovery.
Practicing doctors are very busy taking care of their patients. They don't have much time to keep up with the latest research. The pharmaceutical companies bombard them with information, samples and conferences in order to sell more of their products so doctors receive a biased view. Unfortunately, the information used by most clinic doctors tends to be 15-20 years behind the knowledge of medical research.
Pharmaceutical industry doctors are employed by the pharmaceutical companies in sales or marketing or as consultants. They are used to convince doctors to prescribe certain drugs to their patients and to have the media cover their products.
The field of medicine is also filled with politics and lobbying groups, working to push their ideas to the forefront. The information given to the public is often tainted by these behind-the-scenes deals.
