Vicious Cycle Disorders

Symptoms have a number of functions:
  • Act as a catalyst to initiate action
  • Provide a focus for attention
  • Define a direction for change
  • Illuminate a desire

They want us to take notice that something is out of balance but they don't necessarily point right to the cause.

People who have VCDs often wonder why their symptoms are recurring and why they have created this pattern. We develop many recurring habits and attitudes during our lifetimes that restrict our choices in life. Some of these are:

  • Repetitive thoughts and emotions, such as "I'm not good enough" and "a stiff upper lip"
  • Childhood lessons that teach us "good behavior" such as not screaming in anger
  • Habits and routines in every day life, like that morning cup of coffee
  • Disconnection from the spiritual realm, such as feeling discontent or incomplete

We operate in a "free will" universe where we choose our actions. When we choose an action that makes us feel good, we often repeat that action to keep getting the good feeling. These actions may then become habits. Often, Vicious Cycle Disorders are a result of a habit gone wrong. As an example, think of alcoholism. One drink might taste and feel good but too many will lead to problems.

Attitudes work the same way. Being stoic can come in handy in many life situations but suppressing feelings over the long term will cause health issues. Feelings are registered in the body and, if not expressed, will remain lodged there. Eventually, this will cause energy to be diverted and symptoms will appear.

Quantum physics, the physics of incredibly small particles, offers insights into the development of VCDs, specifically the wave-particle theory. In trying to define waves and particles, physicists found that both exist. When observed, they can only be seen as one form or the other, but never both at the same time. The process of observation causes the particles to choose a state in which to exist and be seen.

This same idea relates to looking at the symptoms of VCDs. Our thoughts and emotions define our life-view and then change our reality to fit that. Our self-defined perspective sets limits on what we will allow and not allow into our lives. Living by habits and childhood attitudes disconnects us from the virtual realm.

A critical step in stopping destructive habits is developing self-awareness. The practice of self-awareness is taught in many spiritual traditions. The outcome of spiritual practices such as yoga, meditation, prayer, and journaling is the integration of the three realms. These practices help us notice our thoughts, feelings, and desires. Once we recognize them, we can choose which ones to keep, which ones to let go, and new ones to replace them.

Self-awareness allows us to consciously create our lives by choosing where our attention is given. We have 60,000 thoughts every day and are generally not conscious of most of them. Through self-awareness, we choose our thoughts and focus on the ones we want. Attention to certain thoughts means that actions will follow and this creates life situations.

Self-awareness will also rebuild our relationship with the virtual realm. It can open the door to new possibilities and ideas from the infinite potential of the universe. Our "operating system" can expand to include more of the unseen world. From this perspective, it is easier to acquire an objective view of our lives and allow new choices to be made.

Following are some reminders to help you create a better life.

Choose one of the tools for self-awareness (yoga, prayer, etc.) and practice it on a daily basis.

Be aware that you are creating your life by your choices.

Choose positive attitudes and thoughts to allow good things into your life.

Make conscious choices about what you want in your life.

Make a commitment to the changes and outcomes you want.

Evaluate thoughts and behaviors; change the ones you don't want to keep.
